Before the argument that resulted in the departure of Salazar Slytherin, the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry agreed that they would like a way of returning to the school if a time came when they were needed. Salazar's suggestion of creating horcruxes was immediately rejected by his colleagues and none of them wished to become ghosts after their death.
Instead, Helga and Rowena began to develop a new branch of magic. They used the idea of a horcrux and turned it on its head, using their creation of the school as an equal but opposite action to murder. They preserved their consciousness within their portraits and cast several enchantments upon each of them to prevent them being destroyed by anyone but themselves.
Hundreds of years have passed since the death of the founders and many horrors have been unleashed within the walls of their school since then. Salazar's Chamber of Secrets was opened on two occasions and several students died in the many Triwizard Tournaments that were held between Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The most recent of these adversities was the Battle for Hogwarts, which resulted in the destruction of much of the castle and the loss of many on both sides. It was after this battle that the founders agreed enough was enough. The next time things in their school began to break down, they would action their enchantments.
On June 30th 2044, Headmistress Katherine Dalton was signing documents in her office that needed to be sent to the Ministry of Magic for September. The students had already been waved off at Hogsmeade Station and the staff had also returned to their homes. A depressing chill swept across the room, notifying her that somehow a Dementor had entered her office. Katherine lost all hope when she reached for her wand and found only an empty drawer.
It wasn't until August 31st that her shell was found. A representative of the Ministry of Magic had come to collect the documents in person after Katherine had failed to send them. She was placed in the Janus Thickey ward at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries while her deputy took over as Headmaster.
The founders didn't believe a Dementor would simply wander into the office of its own accord and decided that now was as good a time as ever to return to life and help the school in its hour of need. They each selected a student from their house and began appearing in their dreams to give them the instructions they would need to bring them back.
